Chef Ambassador Jonathan Gushue
Jonathan Gushue
Chef & Owner The Gate
Originally from Newfoundland, Chef Jonathan Gushue developed a deep appreciation for food and flavour from an early age. His passion was sparked by his travels, which began when he was just 13, exposing him to diverse culinary experiences that shaped his approach to cooking.
Growing up, his father—who had lived in Italy—found solace in cooking and ingredient exploration on the weekends. Jonathan often joined him on these adventures, searching for fresh basil and other ingredients, which ignited his fascination with flavour and quality.
A natural innovator, Jonathan thrives on change and continuous learning—an approach that extends beyond the kitchen and into his business. His dedication to excellence has earned him prestigious accolades, including the Pinnacle Awards for Canadian Chef of the Year. During his tenure at Langdon Hall, the restaurant was recognized on the San Pellegrino list of the world's best restaurants, ranking at #77.
Today, his commitment to exploration and evolution defines both his culinary philosophy and his work at The Gate, where he creates thoughtful, refined dishes that reflect his journey and passion.
"The D5 4Qt Essential pan is absolutely my favorite. If I only have one thing in the kitchen, I’d probably have that. They made it very much along the lines of their traditional copper pans. Like they aren’t big, thick, heavy. It’s the only thing that there is what needs to be there.”
